Ayurveda, the ancient medical science of India, is accepted as the oldest scientific medical system, with a long record of clinical experience. It is not merely a doctrine of medical treatment, but a way of healthy long life. Ayurveda teaches us how to maintain and protect health, how to cure diseases and how to promote longevity. Ayurveda treats man as a whole - which is a combination of body, mind and soul.
Ayurveda teaches us to understand our body; our particular nature; and our individual mixture of elements at a deep physical, mental and emotional level. With that knowledge we are able to identify activities, conditions, herbs and foods that either keep us healthy and in balance, or make us ill and throw us out of balance.
Ayurveda is the eternal, holistic, Vedic science of life, and the traditional natural healing system of India. Ayurveda builds a healthy body, and establishes inner peace. This science stems from the principle that everything in the universe is made up of the Pancha Mahabuthas or five basic elements: Akash (Space), Vayu (Air), Agni (Fire), Jal (Water) and Prithvi (Earth). Combinations of these element pairs create the three biological forces of Tridoshas- Vata (Space & Air), Pitta (Fire) and Kapha (Earth). Harmonizing these forces leads to a healthy way of life, while disruption of the balance causes ailments. Ayurveda treats the person as a whole-the body, the mind and the soul. It helps to maintain balance and creates harmony in our existential reality, both the intangible emotional expressions and the tangible physiological realities. Today, Ayurveda is the forefront of mind-body medicines, gaining attention throughout the world. Ayurveda, with its understanding of life and consciousness, will become the medicine of the future.
Yoga and meditation are integral part of Ayurvedic curriculum. According to one school of thought, Yoga is an ancient science aimed at balancing the mind for the sake of self-realization and awareness, whereas Ayurveda is a sister concern of Yoga, aimed at balancing the mind in relation to the body. Yoga evolved 6000 years ago and is a scientific method for spiritual development.
Chronic liver diseases, including cirrhosis, once considered as alcohol-induced, are now fast catching up among urban Keralites like other lifestyle disorders, including diabetes and hypertension. With the people getting fatter and richer, the liver diseases have also increased proportionately. According to a recent study, 5000 to 10,000 people die every year in the state due to liver diseases, compared to the national average of 70,000 while the National Institute of Health data shows that liver cirrhosis is the 12th leading cause of death by any disease in the country.
The rate of non-alcohol-related fatty liver diseases in Kerala is more than 30 per cent while alcohol accounts for only 30 per cent of the ailment. “Since the liver diseases will not have early symptoms, those with high risk factors should have regular check-up. What makes liver different from other organs is its capacity to function normally until 80 per cent of it is damaged,” “The tendency among Indians, especially South Indians, for fat deposit in the mid-portion of the body also is a high risk factor,”
• The liver plays an important role in many bodily functions from protein production and blood clotting to cholesterol, glucose (sugar), and iron metabolism
• Cirrhosis
• Alcohol abuse
• Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E
• Epstein Barr virus (infectious mononucleosis)
• Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
• Iron overload
Skin is the seat of a sense organ. The senses of touch, pain, temperature, pressure are felt by it. It is a Matruj Avyava i.e. derived from mother or having maternal origin. It gives external covering to the whole body. The seven layers of skin get their nutrition from Mansa Dhatu {muscle tissue}. It is known as an UpDhatu (secondary tissue product) of the Raktadhatu (blood) because it only mimics the Dhatu's in beholding the body. It does not do Poshan Karma i.e. do not give nutrition to the other Dhatus. As skin is an Upadhatu of the Raktadhatu , it is a mirror that reflects the qualities of the Raktadhatu (blood) and the Rasadhatu (body's plasma tissue).Hence it is a common saying that 'glowing skin is the result of good quality Rasa and Rakta'.
